My entire career, I have been a huge fan of the author Debbie Miller (Reading With Meaning; Teaching With Intention), and her books have molded the instruction that I give in my classroom. Today, as I sit writing this, I am not at my usual place in the room but rather in a meeting with other excited educators waiting to listen to this wonderful woman share her thoughts. I will miss my kiddos greatly today, but I can't wait to share what I have learned! Have a wonderful weekend!Shannon Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01390929324150771096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9185137674606941804.post-5328653035554836142011-04-14T11:31:00.003-04:002011-04-14T11:34:43.342-04:00Selecting Our Animals<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w2YdmShZBnI/TacTddOmtyI/AAAAAAAAAiw/1cIzhmTtb7E/s1600/Picture%2B1.png" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 195px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w2YdmShZBnI/TacTddOmtyI/AAAAAAAAAiw/1cIzhmTtb7E/s320/Picture%2B1.png" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5595462458814150434" /></a>We have been talking in great detail about animal classifications, habitats, and Ohio's environments. We planted sugar snap peas (which the seeds are actually the peas- the kids were fascinated with that). They each made their own label, and found their own spot. We talked about the basic needs of plants, and how we were going to provide these needs. Then, we made predictions about which day we thought we would start to see some sprouting. It was an exciting morning here in 2nd grade!Shannon Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01390929324150771096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9185137674606941804.post-23721244869480416342011-04-04T11:25:00.002-04:002011-04-04T11:31:38.943-04:00Nonfiction Writing<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WMs3u7nEBzw/TZnjg3pViMI/AAAAAAAAAig/P7t8K5VN1Tk/s1600/DSCN1105.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WMs3u7nEBzw/TZnjg3pViMI/AAAAAAAAAig/P7t8K5VN1Tk/s320/DSCN1105.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591750566189828290" /></a>Today we started our nonfiction writing unit. We had such a good time! We began by looking at a book that answered such questions as <i>what is earwax made of</i>, <i>how many hairs are on my head</i>, <i>how high until my balloon pops</i>, and my personal favorite <i>if a deaf person speaks in sign and reads lips, do they think in sign too</i>? <div><br /></div><div>We then sat down and created a list of things we thought we were an expert in (what we had to teach others), and things we could learn more about. It was amazing how similar some of our lists looked. There were also a lot of people who's expert lists matched some "want to know" lists. It was a great experience!<br /><br /></div>Shannon Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01390929324150771096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9185137674606941804.post-89001614382240055662011-04-01T21:02:00.002-04:002011-04-01T21:05:30.553-04:00Our Famous Person Projects<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dye46Xz_tM_I6nPDJW-yajdPr0JrievgfqmIcComBArSBrdbV-gYSYU1-sYenpC6TCKPbnCrqG5vCgxCl506w' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe><div>They did such an amazing job! We started by reading the books <i>Actual Size</i> and <i>What Do You Do With A Tail Like This</i>, both of which are by Steve Jenkins. We then moved into comparing fiction and nonfiction using the books <i>Frogs</i> and <i>Frog and Toad are Friends</i>. Today, we selected 11 books from the library on sharks (so each set of partners could have <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">their</span> own book), and reviewed the features that made that text nonfiction. We looked at things such as the index, table of contents, glossary, etc. We also talked about what these elements bring to nonfiction, and why they are important. It was really exciting to see how much the kids were loving the books about sharks. There were a great deal of "ooh"'s, "oh my gosh", and "look at that"s coming from our classroom. And, at the end, the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">nonfiction</span> section was the most popular place during read-to-self time. It was a wonderful day!<br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8UW8giiuA6g/TZSYgH4RO9I/AAAAAAAAAiI/0j29XsaZ_Sk/s1600/DSCN1042.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8UW8giiuA6g/TZSYgH4RO9I/AAAAAAAAAiI/0j29XsaZ_Sk/s200/DSCN1042.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5590260715111922642" /></a><br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-b-rDY2QhSjQ/TZSYfgDNsnI/AAAAAAAAAiA/thYngMSKSsM/s1600/DSCN1040.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-b-rDY2QhSjQ/TZSYfgDNsnI/AAAAAAAAAiA/thYngMSKSsM/s200/DSCN1040.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5590260704420409970" /></a><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DIxhibkMMe4/TZSYfHvgnSI/AAAAAAAAAh4/CEzJys0bfFA/s1600/DSCN1041.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DIxhibkMMe4/TZSYfHvgnSI/AAAAAAAAAh4/CEzJys0bfFA/s200/DSCN1041.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5590260697895312674" /></a><br /><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;font-size:130%;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" line-height: 20px;font-size:15px;"><br /></span></span>Shannon Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01390929324150771096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9185137674606941804.post-77196997498629077482011-03-30T13:10:00.002-04:002011-03-30T13:12:50.598-04:00ChaperonesThank you so much to all of the parents who signed up to be a <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">chaperone</span>! Soon, your child will be talking to you about topics he or she is interested in and would like to learn more about. </div><div><br /></div><div>We will research and collect information about topics that interest your child. Research in second grade is about three things: observing closely, asking questions, and reading. For example, a child writing about and thinking about manatees can visit the local zoo, talk to a zookeeper, visit websites, and look at various research books.</div><div><br /></div><div>Please talk with your child about his or her interests and help with the research process at home by facilitating this wonderful conversation. We look forward to learning a lot together!</div><div><br /></div>Shannon Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01390929324150771096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9185137674606941804.post-69391510379368897962011-03-18T13:23:00.002-04:002011-03-18T13:28:17.386-04:00Animal Habitats<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dwNfmwFb3GEozxrYm63DIuNudTJRk8s2OYSJ6Sj9BeM7YNOK2bh_wVUNO4TIWNN-mid42oHA3k8b2EI1K6fWQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe><div>Today, Mrs. Pettit came from Franklin SWCD came to talk to us about animal in Ohio and the habitats they live in. It is called railroad repair, and it is a pretty challenging game. The basis is not only in logic, but decimals (parts of a whole) as well. You can get to the link <a href="http://pbskids.org/cyberchase/games/decimals/">here</a>. We hope you enjoy it!<div style='clear:both; text-align:LEFT'><a href='http://picasa.google.com/blogger/' target='ext'><img src='http://photos1.blogger.com/pbp.gif' alt='Posted by Picasa' style='border: 0px none ; padding: 0px; background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 50%; -moz-background-clip: initial; -moz-background-origin: initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: initial;' align='middle' border='0' /></a></div>Shannon Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01390929324150771096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9185137674606941804.post-40995214256760367722011-03-16T09:57:00.000-04:002011-03-16T09:57:10.719-04:00Tonigh's Schedule<div style="text-align:center;margin:0px auto 10px;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FNjmDPgqoQU/TYDBtZUXxUI/AAAAAAAAAhY/gXOk17ojQqg/s1600/Picture%2B2.jpg"><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FNjmDPgqoQU/TYDBtZUXxUI/AAAAAAAAAhY/gXOk17ojQqg/s400/Picture%2B2.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a> </div>Here is the student-led conference schedule for tonight. I am so excited for your child to be able to share all of <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">their</span> learning and hard work with you! These conferences last (typically) between 20-30 minutes, and your child will be doing all of the talking. They have been working very hard to get ready for this evening, and are taking a great deal of responsibility with this task. During our online exploration this evening, I came across a new math game (among others which I will share tomorrow) and I wanted to share the game with you. It is called Dice Wars, and we are going to learn how to play formally tomorrow. Here is a link, along with directions, to play the game. I hope you enjoy <a href="http://hoodamath.com/games/dicewars.php">Dice Wars</a>!Shannon Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01390929324150771096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9185137674606941804.post-28908817196845749042011-03-14T09:44:00.000-04:002011-03-14T09:44:51.964-04:00Talking Points<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JEvYVieIEMs/TX4b0oF9HuI/AAAAAAAAAhQ/H7ZLD_dfR88/s1600/0590539604_lg.jpg"><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JEvYVieIEMs/TX4b0oF9HuI/AAAAAAAAAhQ/H7ZLD_dfR88/s320/0590539604_lg.jpg" border="0" alt="" style="clear:both;float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;" /></a> Today in reading workshop, we started looking at how authors communicate what characters are saying in stories. We started by reading the book <i>Somebody and the Three Blairs</i>, taking time to stop and look at all of the conversation that was going on. We selected three sentences from the story, so that we could study dialogue, tone, and pace (along with the usage and placement of quotation marks). Here are the sentences we looked at:<br /><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#FF0000;">Baby Blair said, "Bye-bye. Come again and play tomorrow."</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#3333FF;">"This cereal is too dry," said Somebody.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#009900;">"Issa big teddy bear," said Baby Blair.</span></div><div>We will keep discussing the conversation of stories, so if you discover them on your nightly exploration of books, be sure to have your kids tell you all about them!</div><div style='clear:both; text-align:RIGHT'><a href='http://picasa.google.com/blogger/' target='ext'><img src='http://photos1.blogger.com/pbp.gif' alt='Posted by Picasa' style='border: 0px none ; padding: 0px; background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 50%; -moz-background-clip: initial; -moz-background-origin: initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: initial;' align='middle' border='0' /></a></div>Shannon Pricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01390929324150771096noreply@blogger.com0
